A man was stuck on his rooftop in a flood.
As he considered his options, he realised the best thing to do would be to wait for a sign from God. After all, he knew God would help him and would no doubt send him a divine signal.
He sat down and began praying for help.
As he closed his eyes, he was interrupted when a man in a rowboat came by. He was collecting people caught in the flood and shouted, ‘Jump in, and I’ll take you to dry land.’
The stranded man turned and shouted back, ‘No, it’s ok. I think I’ll stay here for now. I’m praying to God for a sign as to what to do and I know that he’s going to save me.’
Somewhat reluctantly, the man in the rowboat went on.
A short while later, a lady in a motorboat came by. She still had plenty of space in her boat and shouted up to the man on the roof, ‘Climb into the boat and I’ll take you to dry land’.
To this the stranded man said, ‘No thanks, I think I’ll be ok. I’m sure the waters will soon subside as I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”
And so the motorboat went on.
The waters continued to rise and the man continued to pray. He was sure that before long, God would send him a sign and that all would be ok.
Time ticked on.
By now the waters were splashing at his feet. All the other townsfolk had been rescued but the man continued to wait.
Then a helicopter came by.
The pilot hovered overhead and his co-pilot came to the door and shouted down, ‘Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.’
To this the stranded man again replied, ‘No thanks, I’m praying to God, waiting for a sign. He will tell me what to do. I have faith.’
So the helicopter reluctantly flew away.
Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned.
As he arrived at Heaven’s gates, he went inside feeling somewhat vexed. And before long, he finally got his chance to discuss the whole sorry situation with God.
He turned to him and explained, ‘I prayed to you and asked for a sign. I had faith in you but you didn’t save me. You let me drown. I don’t understand why. Why didn’t you save me? Why didn’t you send me a sign?’
To this God replied, ‘I sent you a rowboat, a motorboat and a helicopter – how many more signs did you expect?’
